英語の基数詞
twenty「20」やone「1」のように単独で使える数詞を単純数詞，twenty-one「21」や，two hundred「200」のように単純数詞を組み合わせたものを合成数詞と呼ぶ。

eleven「11」とtwelve「12」はそれぞれゲルマン祖語の*ainlif, *twalifまで遡り，「10」より多い部分を指して"1あまり"，"2あまり"のような構造になっている。一方，「13から19」までは，"3から9＋teen（10）"で，1の位と10の位を組み合わせたもの。これらの構造は，英語を含むゲルマン語派の言語に広く見られる。

「20から90」までは2から9＋ty（10）で，"2×10"，"3×10"，"4×10"……という構造になっている。
「21から99」までは，10の位と1の位の数詞を並べてハイフンでつなぐ。

100の位はhundredを使って表す。「100」に付くaとoneの違いについては「#補足」を参照。前に2以上の基数詞が来ても，hundredは変化しない。
後ろに「99以下」の基数詞を続けると，「999以下」の合成数詞ができる。100の位とそれ以下との間には接続詞andを挟むが，省略されることもある。

「1000以上」の基数詞は3桁ごとに位が変わる。thousand, million, billion, trillionなどの位を表す数詞は，前に「2以上」の基数詞が来ても変化しない。aとoneの違いは「#補足」を参照。

補足
「100」「1000」「100万」などを表すときには，位を表す数詞の前にaまたはoneを置く。aのほうがよりくだけた言い方で，oneのほうがよりかたい言い方。
また，aは先頭の位置でしか使えない（2100をtwo thousand a hundredとするのは×）。先頭の位置でも，全体が長くなる場合はoneのほうが自然。

単純数詞と合成数詞
0，1から9，10から19，20から90などは単純数詞，ほかは合成数詞として表す。
合成数詞の作り方
21から99は10の位と1の位をハイフンで結ぶ。100以上と99以下の間には接続詞andが入るが，省略されることもある。
位取り
1000以上の基数詞は，3桁ごとに位が変わる。
